The sarcomere is the basic unit of the myofibrils, which mediate skeletal and cardiac Muscle contraction. Two transverse structures, the Z-disc and the M-band, anchor the thin (actin and associated proteins) and thick (myosin and associated proteins) filaments to the elastic filament system composed of titin.A plethora of proteins are known to be integral or associated proteins of the Z-disc and its structural and signalling role in muscle is better understood, while the molecular constituents of the M-band and its function are less well defined. Evidence discussed here suggests that the M-band is important for managing force imbalances during active muscle contraction. Its molecular composition is fine-tuned, especially as far as the structural linkers encoded by members of the myomesin family are concerned and depends on the specific mechanical characteristics of each particular muscle fibre type. Muscle activity signals from the M-band to the nucleus and affects transcription of sarcomeric genes, especially via serum response factor (SRF).The paracrystalline arrangement of the contractile proteins actin and myosin in cross-striated muscle is due to two transverse structures in the sarcomere, the basic unit of the myofibrils, which are the Z-disc and the M-band (Fig. 1). The structural and signalling role of the Z-disc is studied widely and its components and role are reasonably well understood and frequently reviewed (e.g.

We at Steven Singer are here to help! 14Karat White, Yellow, and Rose Gold plain bands come traditionally in MM measurements from 1mm-7mm. You can order a band in any millimeter you want. Most manufacturers carry up to a 10mm.The MM of the band is how wide it appears on the finger. Some people prefer a thicker MM vs a thinner one. Thinner millimeter bands are considered more feminine and can be worn more easily in a stack.Thicker millimeter bands are easily worn alone and are considered more masculine.

The sarcomere of striated muscle is an efficient molecular machine, characterized by perfect structural organization of contractile filaments. This order is ensured by the sarcomere cytoskeleton, an important element of which is the M-band, believed to maintain the thick filament lattice. We review here recent progress in understanding the M-band function and its structural organization. We explain how the M-band might reduce the intrinsic instability of thick filaments and help titin to maintain order in the sarcomeres. The M-band molecular structure has been clarified recently by biochemical and biophysical approaches that focused on the properties of the prominent M-band component myomesin. These have shown that antiparallel myomesin dimers might link the thick filaments in the M-band, a role analogous to that of α-actinin in the Z-disc. Furthermore, similar to titin, myomesin is a molecular spring with complex visco-elastic properties that can be modified by alternative splicing. The sarcomere is the basic contractile unit of striated muscles (see Box 1). While actin (thin) filaments and myosin (thick) filaments interact and generate the contraction force, other proteins form a scaffold that assures the efficiency of their interaction and optimal transmission of the generated force. This scaffold, or sarcomeric cytoskeleton (see Glossary), contains three basic structural elements. The transverse structures are Z-discs, anchoring the thin filaments, and M-bands that crosslink the thick filaments in the center.
Explore a thoughtfully curated list of bands and artists that start with the letter M. From iconic names to overlooked gems, discover the range and depth packed into just one letter.
There’s something to be said for that kind of presence—persistent without being overbearing. So if you’re skimming through music collections, old playlists, or maybe even unlabeled CDs, the M section might surprise you. Below is a list of bands and artists whose names start with M.Somewhere between moving furniture and trying to set up an old stereo that hadn’t worked properly in years, a stack of dusty CDs fell out of a box labeled 'random.' Not sure why I kept them. Most were scratched, unlabeled, or just part of an era when the idea of owning music felt like a bigger deal. Not necessarily the most popular letter. Not the most groundbreaking either. But there's a consistency there—acts whose names begin with M tend to stick. Not always flashy, not always first to mind, but present. Somewhere in the shuffle, always showing up. And that 'M' covers a strange range, too.Metallica performs at the 2022 Lollapalooza at Grant Park.

Thick filaments are organized bundles of myosin, while thin filaments are made of actin along with the two other regulatory proteins (troponin and tropomyosin). Each sarcomere divides into different lines, bands, and zone: “I” and “A” bands, “M” and “Z” lines, and the “H” zone. However, the A band’s size remains constant during contraction. The Sarcomere. A sarcomere is a contractile unit of skeletal muscle that is divided into I and A bands, M and Z lines, and H zone.Tropomyosin: A protein involved in skeletal muscle contraction and that wraps around actin and prevents myosin from grabbing it. I-band: The area adjacent to the Z-line, where actin is not superimposed by myosin.M-line: The line at the center of a sarcomere to which myosin bind. Z-line: Neighboring, parallel lines that define a sarcomere. H-band: the area adjacent to the M-line, where myosin is not superimposed by actin.

McNamara et al. show that ALPK3 is an M-band protein required for phosphorylation of sarcomeric proteins and components of the protein quality control apparatus. Further, the autophagy receptor sequestosome-1 requires ALPK3 activity for sarcomeric localization.
Muscle contraction is driven by the molecular machinery of the sarcomere. As phosphorylation is a critical regulator of muscle function, the identification of regulatory kinases is important for understanding sarcomere biology. Pathogenic variants in alpha kinase 3 (ALPK3) cause cardiomyopathy and musculoskeletal disease, but little is known about this atypical kinase.Nature Cardiovascular Research - McNamara et al. show that ALPK3 is an M-band protein required for phosphorylation of sarcomeric proteins and components of the protein quality control apparatus....Pathogenic variants in alpha kinase 3 (ALPK3) cause cardiomyopathy and musculoskeletal disease, but little is known about this atypical kinase. Here we show that ALPK3 is an essential component of the M-band of the sarcomere and define the ALPK3-dependent phosphoproteome.ALPK3 deficiency impaired contractility both in human cardiac organoids and in the hearts of mice harboring a pathogenic truncating Alpk3 variant. ALPK3-dependent phosphopeptides were enriched for sarcomeric components of the M-band and the ubiquitin-binding protein sequestosome-1 (SQSTM1) (also known as p62).
